This 7-day Jeep tour is a practical way to experience Upper Mustang without a long trekking itinerary. The journey follows the Kali Gandaki Valley from Pokhara towards Kagbeni and then enters the restricted area, where the landscape changes into dry cliffs, deep valleys, rocky trails and traditional Tibetan-influenced villages.
The main highlight is Lo Manthang at 3,840 m, where you can explore its old streets, monasteries and traditional mud-brick architecture. The return journey passes through Muktinath and Jomsom before continuing back to Pokhara and Kathmandu. Most of the journey is by private 4WD Jeep, with short walks for sightseeing and exploring villages.
Drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara along the Prithvi Highway. The route follows river valleys and green hills before reaching Pokhara. After arriving, check into the hotel and prepare for the Mustang journey.
Drive towards Jomsom through the Kali Gandaki Valley, passing Tatopani, Marpha and the dry mountain landscapes of Mustang. Continue to Kagbeni, an old settlement at the gateway to Upper Mustang. The village has narrow lanes, traditional houses and strong Tibetan Buddhist influence.
Enter the restricted Upper Mustang region and drive north through Chele, Syangboche and Ghami. The road crosses dramatic dry valleys, cliffs and mountain passes before continuing towards Lo Manthang. Arrive at the historic walled city and settle into the guesthouse.
Spend the day exploring Lo Manthang and its surrounding areas. Visit traditional monasteries, old houses and the historic walled settlement. A Jeep excursion to Chhoser can include the famous cliff caves and nearby villages, depending on road and local conditions.
Leave Lo Manthang and drive south through the Mustang landscape. Continue towards Muktinath, an important pilgrimage site for both Hindus and Buddhists. After visiting the area, continue by Jeep towards Jomsom for the night.
Drive south through the Kali Gandaki Valley, passing Marpha and Tatopani. The scenery gradually changes from the dry high-altitude landscape of Mustang to greener hills and forests. Continue to Pokhara and check into the hotel.
